Amy Glovsky Abreu
began Oopa Baby in 2004, as she and her husband
became increasingly disappointed with many of the
"must have" carriers their friends raved
about, finding them either uncomfortable or unattractive.
To satisfy her craving for a baby sling that
she could use to carry around her baby Tiago
and complement her outfit at the same time, Amy
began designing her own slings, both for herself
and friends. Oopa Baby was born out of an earnest
desire to create a hip and stylish alternative to
traditional baby slings and carriers -- making babywearing
a fashion statement, as well as a wonderful thing
to do for your child. The word Oopa (spelled "upa"
in Portuguese and Spanish) is a colloquial phrase
adults use when speaking to children, meaning "up!",
as in "Come on, let me pick you up....upa!"
